A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown

5.0

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is a duel POV story between Malik, an Eshran who must sneak into Ziran to make a new life for him and his sisters, but has to pretend he isn't who he is, and Karina, the princess of Ziran, though she would do anything to have her older sister back to take her place. Bahia's Comet is about to enter the sky for a week, which only happens every 50 years. and commences Solstasia, a celebration of the creation of Ziran. When Malik's younger sister gets stolen and can't be returned unless Malik kills Karina, he must find a way to be chosen for the Solstasia challenges to get close to her. But Karina has her own motives, and when their paths collide, there's no telling who will make it out alive.

I really enjoyed reading A Song of Wraiths and Ruin. The imagery took me to Ziran and I could picture the characters and the setting. I loved the legends that wove themselves into the story, and who doesn't love a book that has some sort of competition in it. I also really liked that the actual Solstasia challenges weren't the main focus of the story, but it helped the pacing and kept my interest. I always love a book that can make me think that one thing is going to happen but then something else does and completely takes me off guard, and that's exactly what this book did.

I liked the characters, both Karina and Malik were complex. I think it would have been interesting if we had gotten more of a back story of Malik, there were a few times when things that had happened in his past were mentioned, but I wanted more. I did get the sense that it was something he would rather forget about which would be why we didn't get as much detail about it, but I just wanted to know him more. Which I'm hoping we'll get in book 2! There were instances that Karina kind of annoyed me, but I overall liked her as a character, and the end revelation did kind of help explain her character a little more.

I would highly recommend A Song of Wraiths and Ruin to anyone who enjoys fantasy and is looking for a unique story. I personally had not read anything like it before, which was really nice. I am definitely looking forward to book 2!
