The Godfather
by Mario Puzo
A fun book that romanticizes the Mafia a bit by justifying the atrocities committed as loyalty to family and friends. A bit sleazy. Lots of extraneous sex. Women viewed from a very misogynistic angle. However, the characters were a lot of fun and of course, this book inspired one of the greatest movies ever made (or so I've heard, I have yet to watch it; on my list now that I've read the book).
The book has plotting and intrigue and some big twists. I think more modern authors have pulled off the big payoff moments better than this book did, but I think overall, most readers will be satisfied with the Corleone family "justice".
A relatively easy read. Worth reading just for being the cultural icon that it is.
