From Third World to First: Singapore and the Asian Economic Boom by Lee Kuan Yew

3.0

Looking through all the glowing reviews for this book, I find myself wondering if I read the same book as everyone else. To me, it was just another political memoir by a self-serving politician. And in this case, the politician was an authoritarian with no regard for freedom of speech or the press, a laughable sense of morality (banning bubblegum as a social ill, for example), and incredibly dubious views on race and class. Reagan got the idea of "evil empire" from him, Deng Xiaoping was constantly asking his advice, and, well, you get the rest - he was clearly the most interesting man in the world, at least in his own head. Stay skeptical, my friends.
