Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie
5.0

Rating: 5/5

This concludes my reread of the First Law trilogy and I’m not really sure what I can say about this series which hasn’t already been said by so many others.

I know I have said it many times before but I’m going to keep banging this drum and say that Joe Abercrombie truly is a master of character. At the heart of it, The First Law is really a series driven by characters and Abercrombie weaves such convincing and well-developed, unforgettable characters all the way throughout this series with so many of their flaws laid bare. Glotka is one of my favourite characters in any series and I relished every single page of his POV.

I appreciated the ending of this book even more this time and in rereading the book, I noticed just how much foreshadowing Abercrombie gives for the ending.

Abercrombie doesn’t really give any explicit world-building in the First Law, however, over the course of the trilogy you do get a good sense of the world Abercrombie has built - I would have liked a mapI have to say.

In re-reading this series I realised how much of the First Law I had forgotten and reminded myself just why I rank the this series as one of my absolute top favourite series alongside the Cosmere. I can’t wait to read the stand alones and Age of Madness sequel trilogy.
