Crime and Punishment by Constance Garnett, Fyodor Dostoevsky

3.0

Full disclosure: I probably would have rated this a two, but I tend to give bonus credit to very old books if they’re not completely horrible. This one wasn’t completely horrible. There were realistic and well-described three-dimensional characters, including plenty of well-rounded women (which I find to be rare in novels of any time period), clear and precise descriptions of people and settings, and an easy-to-follow narrative. The downsides: pointlessly repetitive dialog, two separate novels crammed into one, and gratuitous anti-semitism.

(I have published a longer review on my website.)
