this book had so many things i loved: good worldbuilding, a queer normative world, prophecy that rhymed, non-white characters, sibling angst - it was a rlly good time. until anton and jude met and i got an ick. i love gay people as much as the next guy, but it’s rlly uncomfortable to read about a 16yo and a 19yo’s budding romance. kinda spoiled it for me, especially since it feels like those two had the most chapters AND they’re the only main white characters. if I wanted to see two white gays fall in love I’d just go to literally any gay bar. rip to the 4.25 star rating i was gonna give this book but the author should’ve made them the same age or something, im not rooting for a 16 to be with a whole adult💀 it also rlly rubs me the wrong way that all of the non-white MCs are harbingers of evil and shit while the two white MCs are the “good guys”. I don’t think the author did this on purpose but the more I think about it the more it sours the reading experience.
let it be known that i do fw anton and jude heavy, just not…together lmao. anton being a victim of abuse and also the chosen one v much slays to me - something about the chosen one being so reluctant that he tries to kill himself is interesting and unique. he was real asf for that.
Illya‘s trick on Ephyra got my ass so bad im still mad about it. I should’ve known I couldn’t trust that sadistic abusive fuck. Ms. Pool did a rlly good job with that.
that being said, hassan and khepri’s relationship was soooooo cuteeee oough i loved their dynamic i wish we got more of that. love when authors make straight couples interesting. rlly love that khepri is stronger than hassan and he’s not threatened by it - he’s into it!!! i also rlly loved Ephyra and beru’s dynamic too - as someone with younger siblings i understand Ephyra completely. free her your honor, she did all of it but idc‼️
if the only POVs were beru, hassan and Ephyra I would’ve rated this much higher but alas
