Star Wars: Darth Vader volume 3 - The Shu-Torun War

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Leinil Yu (annual), Salvador Larroca (issues 16-19)

An Empire at war. Royalty and barons. Traditions and dancing. A multitude of well written characters all with their own motivations.

Shu-Torun is a planet with a rich mining tradition that has made it rich and rebellious.
Set in the time between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the Empire is hurting after the destruction of the Death Star. Darth Vader is being used as a troubleshooter, quashing rebellions and uprisings.
He also has his own agenda & Palpatine still doesn't fully trust him. There are machinations and schemes within schemes.

The Annual acts as a prequel to the four issues dealing with the war itself.
Yu's artwork is fantastic in the annual. It's dramatic and depicts the expanse of the action so well. While different to Larroca's slick pencil work it isn't a jarring change and helps to establish the prequel as slightly separate and a lead in to the main story.

Vader has installed a new Queen on Shu-Torun and the ore barons aren't happy. They will defy Vader at their own peril.
And don't make the mistake of asking Vader to dance at your ball. You won't like the results 😬.

Gillen's writing is so on point with this series. Great characterisation and the murderous droids Triple Zero and BeeTee One are hilarious in their over zealous approach to helping destroy human enemies.

The young queen turns out to learn the ruthlessness needed to rule very quickly and isn't the weak figurehead she could have been.

Battles, droids, storm troopers, lightsaber wielding twins, and a lethal environment where scenes remind me of the end of Anakin and the birth of Vader in Revenge of the Sith.
An extra issue or two to expand on some characters or action and it would have been perfect.
