The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey

4.0

Opening this book, I was both excited and nervous to read it. The 5th Wave was one of my first ever sci-fi reads in middle school and I was never able to continue the series until now. And I am utterly shocked to say the least. Yancey’s writing style has always been very intriguing to me.

I feel like this book had better flow and a better atmosphere than its predecessor. We also got a peak at so many more of their characters and their lives both before and after the invasion. It was so incredibly refreshing to finally take a peak inside the minds of more than just Cassie and Ben. This book did not fail to have me gasping and nearly in tears at numerous points.

The 5th Wave is a quieter masterpiece. While it still tells a distressing story and the downfall of Earth as we know it, it’s so much less action and war and devastation. The Infinite Sea took all the things 5th Wave, ground it under its boot and set flame to the remaining pieces. This book was the continuation of a cliffhanger into war that The 5th Wave left us with. It was climatic and deadly in all the best ways and had me reeling from the downright agony this book put me through.

My least favorite thing about this book as a whole is Cassie. I was so glad to finally get away from her as the main perspective. She’s an insufferable and selfish in all the worst ways and yet Yancey writes her with so many layers that it’s hard not to believe he’s putting bits of himself into each of these characters. Ringer however, has quickly become my favorite character in this series and quite possibly one of my favorite FMCs of all time. She’s an unbreakable bada*s that despite everything she’s been through still finds a way to love and cherish those around her, to fight for what she wants and what she believes in.

Overall, I think Yancey knocks it out of the park yet again. This was an insanely layered sequel with all the drama, twists, and turns imaginable. Yancey has an inane ability to suck me into his writing the second I pick it up and this book was no different, I finished it in less that 24 hours
