The Secret History by Donna Tartt

5.0

Maybe one day I will actually pull myself together and write a real review for this book.
I don’t even know what to write here. I was going to write a review but then I realized I had way to many thoughts about this book. Like wow, I don’t think I have ever had that many thoughts about one book.

But basically this books is the most beautiful written book I have ever read. Donna Tartt really is kind of a legend when it comes to authors. I picked up the secret history because I heard it was the blueprint for the dark academia genre (which is one of my new favorite genres) and it was. The whole setting and vibe and most of all the characters fits perfectly into the genre.
The plot was intriguing and got more interesting the more into the book we came.
Something I found interesting, was that “book one” was how I expected the book to be, and it fully lived up to that expectation. “Book two” however went a completely different direction than I had expected. The second part of the book was way more intense, as the story (and characters) got more and more corrupted. This however was not a bad thing at all, since this was a very long book and at start I thought it was very slow paced and some bits a bit boring. At the end however I wanted it to be even longer.
There’s no doubt that the highlight for this book was the amazing build characters. I absolutely loved them.
Don’t get me wrong I hated (some of) them too, because they are clearly not good people, and most people would probably call them crazy murderers. Which they are of course but I still loved how complex and different they were.
I am a sucker for a unreliable narrator, so I loved Richard as the narrator. At the very start of the book I knew Henry was going to be the most interesting character, which is also why I loved his character so much.
Francis was my favorite character though, I truly believe he is a good person and he is my precious bean, I just want him to be happy.
Then there’s Charles and Camilla. Camilla I loved too and felt really bad for her at the end. Charles I liked very much in the beginning but the way his character arc turned in the end actually surprised me a lot.
And then there’s Bunny. It’s funny to think that Bunny was the worst of them yet I don’t think he would actually be able to kill another human being.

But yeah 5/5 starts, really beautiful and intriguing.
