Dark Days
by Derek Landy
The books do a great job aging with their audience. Some of the concepts and scenes here are truly grim as all hell, and the foreshadowing is excellent.
Though that leads to one little miff I have with this series: though our deuteragonist is a detective, I really wouldn't call these mystery stories because our primary POV character is still, to some extent, a fish out of water. This means she never has access to quite enough information to sort things out on her own. Rather, they're action stories that keep pace with a mystery, that apply enough excellent foreshadowing and setup to let you get some of the conclusions yourself in Act 3. Mystery-adjacent, I'd say, but with each story we inch closer to a real mystery, and I can appreciate that. Again, aging with its audience.
Huge props for managing an enormous cast of characters, as well as effectively introducing a wealth of doohickeys and whatsits every story without ever relying on a Deus Ex Machina.
