The Floating World
by Axie Oh
a solid read. heavy on the whimsy and atmosphere, and not as strong on the plot and characterization, but overall an enjoyable and creative tale. I’d say this is the most apt ghibli comparison I’ve seen for a book: beyond the aesthetic, there are also environmentalist, anti-war, and coming-of-age themes.
unpretentious writing that maybe leaned a bit too straightforward in terms of telling us the characters’ emotions all the time, but pleasant to read and beautifully descriptive.
a very inventive setting with whimsical yet thought-out fantasy elements. all in all, a solid YA fantasy.
