i enjoyed this novel. the setting felt real and like i was submersed in victorian era england - which i always picture the sherlock holmes movies lol
the book tackles gender, sexuality, class, exploitation, eroticism, and family. it definitely was different than the book i expected which was a love story between kitty and nancy - and in some ways it was that but in a lot of ways it diverted from that and im glad it did.
nancy from the very beginning has an awakening and just wants to be a “tom” (essentially a masc lesbian) and live her life full of performance and pleasure but soon realizes the world is unkind. she finds herself in a lot of precarious situations that somehow workout and ends up with a chosen family and love out in the open.
i could go into the different sections of the book or explore how diana personifies rich & wealthy & exploitative. kitty needs to listen to good luck babe lol
overall a really well written book even if nancy was annoying sometimes. but hey she’s 19-25 so she was the right amount of messy all things considered??? maybe!? lol
