Oryx and Crake
by Margaret Atwood
I read [b:The Handmaid's Tale|38447|The Handmaid's Tale|Margaret Atwood|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1546031886s/38447.jpg|1119185] about fifteen years ago, and I liked it at the time. I liked the series based on that book. I liked a number of other dystopian novels I've read since then, many of which were (explicitly or implicitly) inspired by Atwood's work. I felt like I should return to the source and try another title by [a:Margaret Atwood|3472|Margaret Atwood|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1282859073p2/3472.jpg], so I ended up with [b:Oryx and Crake|46756|Oryx and Crake (MaddAddam, #1)|Margaret Atwood|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1494109986s/46756.jpg|3143431].
What can I say? I wanted to like this, I really did. But somehow this just wasn't for me and I ended up more annoyed than anything else. This story seemed to be going nowhere, there was too much mystifying, too many things about the world building that stood in the way of the suspension of disbelief. And the story was dragged out way too long, so I got bored as well as annoyed, and I gave up on this book after about 100 pages. There are (/were) other Atwood novels on my reading list, but I'm going to stay clear of them for a while.
