The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
by Tony Attwood
So I am meant to be starting a placement in an autism assessment service for adults, but alas, the pandemic. Apparently it's not possible to diagnose autism via a dodgy wifi connection and Skype, which seems fair enough. So instead, I am reading about autism instead in the hope that at some point I might get to be a trainee psychologist in real life again. This book was recommended by my supervisor, and I actually quite enjoyed reading it in a nerdy way. I've not worked properly with people with autism/Asperger's so this felt like a good, comprehensive introduction. It struck the balance nicely, I thought, between imparting lots of information; being quite authentic and human; and being appropriately evidence-based-y. I definitely feel more in the know for having read it, and as academic texts go it wasn't too painful to get through. Hopefully I get to use some of this knew knowledge and awareness in real life in the coming months - who knows!
