The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood

4.0

Some of you might have watched the movie. I prefer to read the book first before I go for the movie, because I know book version is always the best.

It's a wonderful story. I'd been absorbed into the world Ben Sherwood created and I love every minute of reading it.
This story is all about the connection between life and death, how it disrupts a person's life by holding on to the past, and the strong bond between 2 brothers, Charlie and Sam.

Charlie and Sam involve in a tragic car accident, leads to the death of Sam. In fact, Charlie almost dies and experiences crossover between life and death. During the crossover, he makes a promise that he'll never leave Sam. But Charlie is brought back to life when a paramedic saves him, while Sam stays dead.
On Sam's funeral, Charlie somehow could see Sam and they talk to each other as if Sam is a living person. Then Charlie realizes that he's gifted to see the dead spirits in the cemetery. Perhaps it's either because of the promise or crossover.

So Charlie decides to work as a caretaker of cemetery so he can meet Sam right after sunset and do everything they used to do before the accident. This routine continues for 13 years, and Sam never gets older because he's a ghost.
Charlie's life is changing when he met Tess, a sailor.
They're in love. But, apparently Tess isn't real, she's just a spirit that needed to be found. Tess is actually stranded somewhere on the ocean while she's doing a solo trip on her sailboat.

At this point, Charlie's torn between Tess and Sam. If he goes to see Sam, Tess would never be found. If he goes to save Tess, he'd never see Sam anymore. After so many years, Charlie now is ready to let go of Sam and be devoured to start his new life. So he found Tess and she's still alive.

Then he meets Sam for the very last time, Sam respects his brother's decision and Charlie is watching Sam vanishes before him. Charlie's new life begins.

Frankly, I was getting all misty at the last page. It's a beautiful story........
