Demystifying Disability: What to Know, What to Say, and How to Be an Ally by Emily Ladau

informative fast-paced

5.0

This book was so informative about not only Emily Ladau’s personal experience with her own disabilities, but also about the history of disability advocacy in the US and what activists are still doing today to fight for more equity and accessibility. She also discusses how to be a good ally, or rather accomplice, to the disability community. I think the biggest takeaway from this book is that people are more than just their disability, but that it’s still a part of them and ignoring that doesn’t lead to any progress. Whether its a disability you can see or one that’s invisible, there will likely be a point in your life that you’ll either know someone who is disabled or you’ll become disabled yourself. So these basic needs and rights are really going to benefit everyone, and we should all be stepping up to join the movement.
