The whole thing seemed like a long, drawn-out opportunity for the author to hit us over the head again and again with her views on how backward Catholicism is. The main character (not particularly likable despite the fact that she was supposed to be) took every opportunity to comment on how ridiculous and deluded all the rural Irish characters were because she's a nurse and believes in science despite being a terrible nurse. The mystery about how Anna was getting fed was obvious from the moment it was hinted at and the second twist was just a big nope for me. Almost dnf'd it there but I was curious how the author was going to try to write herself out of the terrible ending she was hurtling toward. Turns out she didn't.
