I finally picked up my copy of this book as a bit of a break during a particularly intense period, and I went into this it knowing it might be too low-stakes for my taste. While that did end up being the case, there was still a lot to enjoy here.

The setting is your classic D&D-style town, which any traditional fantasy or TTRPG fan will enjoy, and I liked the subtle new bits of lore sprinkled throughout. I'd have loved to have learned even more about the world the book is set in, and how things worked there. We got a small glimpse into how the town of Thune operated, but only when relevant to the story.

I really liked the cast of characters we meet throughout the book, and each is loveable in their own way. I particularly liked Cam, whose low-key but steadfast friendship and support was a real delight. For some reason, I didn't expect the romance to be such a slow burn, but it was very sweet when it came together, and I found myself welling up a bit at the end.

The story itself was very slow-paced, albeit charming. I found myself acutely aware of the low level of conflict, and found most of the small tension points to be resolved a little too easily. I understand that many readers find this to be enjoyable as a low-stakes escape from reality, but I now realise this isn't to my taste, and I need more action and tension.

This was a fun book, and if you want to read the cosiest of cosy fantasy, I would recommend it.
