A Hologram for the King by Dave Eggers

4.0

Superbly written. Eggers doesn't ramble or overly describe or get too tangential. I read "Heartbreaking Work" a while ago and never forgave him for the indulgence even though it was his first book. Clearly he's matured and "Hologram" is intensely readable. I tore through it. The main character is flawed and depressingly relatable for me. But his undeniably good heart shows through his crushing world-weariness. And though the ending was essentially a happy one I give the book a less than perfect grade because it was such a bummer reflection of my own dead end career path. It was hard to shake the feeling of a slow and very real slide into impotent irrelevance.
