Saga, Vol. 5 by Brian K. Vaughan

4.0

Vol. 5 had SO much happening in it, I read it ridiculously fast. At the end of Vol. 5 Marko and the Prince have teamed up to find Dengo, the guy who assassinated the prince's wife and kidnapped his son and who also managed to get onto Alana and Marko's ship and fly off with them.

Dengo has called the Revolution in - a group of freedom fighters who are trying to end the war. Alana is horrified and insists they are terrorists. The group does things like blow up daycare centres, so I'm on her side. Marko and the Prince eventually manage to find Alana and co., but not before their daughter Hazel is taken. The prince, however, is reunited with his baby and kills Dengo immediately.

Meanwhile, Gwen and Sophie team up with The Will's sister, the Brand, to find a cure to fix the Will. Unfortunately, the Brand doesn't survive. When The Will wakes up, he's horrified to learn what his recovery cost.

Most of this volume was action based, but as more characters move in and out, we can see how interconnected everything, and everyone, is. The war has affected everyone terribly, and as it spills out onto the rest of the universe, with more and more people taking sides, it becomes larger and the number of people impacted grows. The cycle of revenge can't stop. There's always someone to blame and someone who feels like another needs to be punished for what happened. This is why Alana and Marko's decision to try and not play into that game is so revolutionary and why it was so heartbreaking when they (hopefully temporarily?) lost their daughter anyway.
