What a powerful story about puberty, sexuality, grief, love, friendship and race.  This book touches on so many issues, but does so with such grace.

It is so important for young readers to have access to stories like this one.  I appreciated it as an adult, but what really packs the punch for me is thinking about the middle schoolers and high schoolers who might read it and find a home within its pages.

Callender writes incredibly nuanced characters chock-full of flaws and complex emotions, it’s hard not to find a way to relate, even if the character’s strife is not your own.

My only complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed and unjustified, but other than that, I have nothing bad to say.
