First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

This was such a good book! A little confusing… honestly, I wasn’t fully paying attention my first time through the book so I had to reread it and got so much more the second time around.

The book is about this girl Evie Porter and she does random jobs for a guy named Mr. Smith. The whole thing is sketchy. She’s currently doing a job and the targets name is Ryan and she moves in with him and is starting to have feelings for him. The whole book goes back and forth from present to past jobs.

There’s a job where she gets a college football coach fired from Florida State, at the end of this job she talks to one of his start athletes and discovers Mitch knew he was getting fired a week ago even though Evie just successfully finished her job. She knows Mitch was the client. In the present she goes to Mitch’s house and pissed him off and also downloaded something on his phone so she can see his screen. Mitch contacts Mr. Smith and Evie and Devon (her most trusted ally) are able to track down Mr. Smith’s real identity.

There are several situations where this happens.

Also in the background Mr. Smith sets up Evie and is leaking footage framing Evie for the death of Amy (plot twist, Amy is still alive and was working with Evie to set Mr. Smith up).

This book was really good but again super confusing! The second time around was SO much better.

I hated the ending though… It ends with Evie, Amy and Devon working together by watching the messaging board Mr. Smith used to get his clients (clients would message saying they just heard the song Dancing in the Moonlight for the first time - which I thought was dumb because why would something so sketchy be so public). And now you can see everyone who previously requested his services. Anyways, Amy calls Evie Ms. Smith at the end.

I’m a romance girly so I did love the romance between her and Ryan. They’re both sketchy and have baggage. Ryan really likes her and was there for her through the Amy framing. Four weeks after her name was cleared for Amy’s murder, she comes back to Ryan’s house and they tell each other everything. Ryan knows Evie was sending Mr. Smith information about his sketchy trucking business but also noticed the information was altered. He knows she was trying to protect him. She comes back “home” to his house and the book ends with him leaving for work on Thursday where he historically would leave the house in a suit and change on the road because he said his Thursday work was just another location at his financial planning company but is actually a trucking company. But now leaves in jeans and a t-shirt.
