The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (2007)-- I first read this and found it rich with description. When I listened to Hosseini read it, I forgot I wasn't part of the characters' lives. If possible, listen to the audio version. I listen to it a couple of times a year -- and fly into the magically rich detail of the story each time.
