For Fox Sake by Emma Dean

4.0

For Fox Sake is the first book in The Chaos of Foxes series by Emma Dean. This is a romantasy with a reverse harem.

We follow Kenzie, a witch with no powers in a family of powerful witches. Needless to say, she is a bit of a disappointment and most of her family just ignores her. Kenzie’s younger sister has been cursed and her powers have been stripped from her. As Kenzie does everything she can to help restore her sister’s powers, she meets three foxes who are there to steal the potion she is looking for before she can get it. Will she be able to get it before they do?

Let’s get the rant portion over with first. One thing that bothers me about a lot of romantasy books is how often they remind you how hot the characters are. I got it the first five times, move on! We get that the main characters are all drool-worthy, let’s get on with the plot and characterization.

Now for the things I liked. Now, I don’t typically enjoy harem tropes, regular or reverse, but I feel this one worked well enough. I loved how fierce Kenzie is for her younger sister and how much she cares for her grandmother. After everything Kenzie has been through in her life as a non-magical witch in a magical world, she doesn’t want her sister, who was a powerful witch before she was cursed, to have to go through the same thing.

The romance between the three fox shifters and Kenzie was instalove-ish and a little over the top, but it also sort of worked. I am interested enough to want to find out what happens so I will pick up the second book.
