Marlena by Julie Buntin
2.0

“Who can recognize the ending as it’s happening? What we live, it seems to me, is pretty much always a surprise.”  ― Julie Buntin, Marlena

Drug addiction, dysfunctional females, troubled friendship, and haunting ghosts of the past, this is what this book is about. Cat was fifteen when she met her next door neighbor Marlena who was a carefree and earthly kind of person to which Cat found fascinating. With her, Cat forgets her troubles with her parents. She starts sneaking out, do drugs, and experience a lot of her “firsts”. They both become good friends but a year after that Marlena’s body was mysteriously found dead. A few years after everything, The mystery to Mar’s death continues to unfold as Sal, who is Mar’s little brother gets in touch with Cat.

Hm… I grew bored with this book. There were some parts where I really got into but most of it were draggy. I thought Sal’s comeback was sort of unnecessary cause it didn’t made any progress. At the end, there wasn’t any answer to things. I think the main message of the book isn’t about finding out why Marlena died (which what I was expecting to read more about) but it shows how friendship can sometimes spark a fire and how it can deliberately burn to ashes too. It’s more of a coming-of-age story rather than a mystery novel.
