The First Day of Spring by Nancy Tucker

4.5

4.5 ⭐️

Despite its cheery-sounding title, this novel is about a very tough subject (a child as a murderer) that will likely dissuade many readers.

Chrissie has a tough situation growing up, and she decides to kill a small child. Half of this story takes place after she kills Steven, and half takes place many years later when she’s out of jail and has a small girl herself.

I think this novel would prompt an interesting book club discussion. Even in myself, it makes me think about if there could have been a confluence of factors that could have happened where I might have committed this heinous crime.

The violence is mostly off the page, but it’s still a tough read.

I did take this in on audio, and - while I thought the story was exceptional - the narration was not. I found the narrator too shrill for my taste. However, I didn’t take of the rating away for that.
