Thinking on Bets contends that you should approach thinking about concepts with a percentage of confidence in mind. Instead of “I know this to be true,” you can think, “If I had to put money on it, I’m 80% confident that this is true.” Using this type of language around others can reduce polarization and bias.
Duke explores this world of percentages, expertly combining her experiences as a professional poker player with well-sourced research. She also peppers in a fair number of sports examples—which were applicable but not my cup of tea.
Many of Duke’s arguments were subtle and sometimes seemed drawn out. At times I wondered why she was still talking about the topic—didn’t she already say that? But then she’d say something that resonated and my attention would snap back. It made me wonder if I’ll need to reread the book to fully grasp the concepts.
I especially enjoyed her discussion of resulting, tilt affecting decision-making, premortems when goal planning, and the general concept of thinking in confidence percentages.
