A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat

4.0

This book was absolutely magical. You could read it as a fan of Les Miserables or without any idea that it has any connection whatsoever. It asks many of the same questions and is a beautiful reinvention of that story for a fantasy middle grade audience. My only complaint is that it is pretty relentlessly optimistic, in contrast to its inspiration. It makes sense, but I would’ve liked to see just a bit more darkness in this book about light.
