Making Faces by Amy Harmon
3.0
Very emotional read that I got through in one day. I thoroughly enjoyed it in the moment but had issues with several things looking back — Fern’s development into becoming “beautiful” because she got contacts and her braces off? I was hoping for a love story where the main character really is average looking, rather than “thinks she’s average but is actually stunning.” Ambrose convincing all his friends it would be a fun time to go hang out in a war zone? WHAT?! His motivation for going wasn’t made all that clear either. I thought it was going to be because his mom died in 9/11 but she didn’t and he later states the reason he went was to escape the pressure of wrestling- nothing to do with his mom. I mean I know he was young but it just made no sense! Fern not developing as a character for the entire book? Rita disappearing until her husband shows up being a maniac without any real discussion of her relationship with him (how Fern and Bailey dealt with it knowing what was happening annoyed me, and she wasn’t really brought up until she was needed for the next plot event.
A lot of God and the Bible. A lot of Shakespeare.
