How to Say Babylon
by Safiya Sinclair
although a dark read, i think this may be one of my favorites of the year. i can see this one sticking with me for a while. going into it, i knew basically nothing about jamaican culture, or the rastafarian religion, but i know loneliness, i know sexual assault and the shame that comes with it, and i know what it means to exist under a religious & authoritarian man. it was astonishing to see how much this completely foreign life she lead had mirrored mine and that of my loved ones. that is definitely to the credit of her writing. she never shied from describing the horror and dread & left me with pure, raw emotion to connect to.
