My Darling Dreadful Thing
by Johanna van Veen
dark
emotional
mysterious
sad
until then, I’ll let the memory of her possess me.
this bewitched me. such a beautiful addition to the romantic gothic horror subgenre and I am so in love with it. the tender intimacy between souls (of all kinds!) was explored beautifully and creepily. the devotedblood drinking at the end coupled with the heartbreaking funeral…god. she loved her so much!!! this book is equally grotesque, sensuous, and tragic; it was made especially for me.
how van veen described each ghostly appearance was so creative! I swear I could feel and hearruth’s clicking jaw behind me as I read. definitely one of my favorite “creature” designs in recent memory.
I have minor critiques regarding the pacing (about 3/4 of the way through) and how it affected their relationship, but that hasn’t eclipsed my love for this book. I am so glad I came across this and I will absolutely be buying a copy.
