Unfortunately, I didn’t like this sequel as much as I liked the first book. I had to convince myself to pick up this book, whereas I was excited to pick up Heartless Hunter. In a way, it felt like Ciccarelli was rushed to get the sequel out, so she made many chapters repetitive – especially Rune’s POV.
I didn’t have strong feelings about Rune and Gideon’s relationship, like I did in the first book. I wanted to see their relationship develop deeper and have more stakes. Which is frustrating because I know the stakes are there, but I didn’t feel the emotions I was supposed to feel. This book has one of my least favorite tropes in romance, which contributed to my disappointment with the whole thing.
I will say, I actually liked the ending, which I’ve seen criticised a lot. That was the most tension I felt through the entire book, which is sad when the whole book is basically about genocide but you don’t feel that tension. I also really like the magic system.
Graphic: Death, Torture
Moderate: Sexual assault
