The Quarterback by Mackenzie Blair

surprisingly, this is the first cliche MM romance i've ever read. and it didn't piss me off!

we have a closeted gay quarterback (matt) at a small southern school who falls for the hot asian (trevor) who's out and pretty alone (because his family also sucks). story revolves around their relationship, football, and the drama of coming out. so yeah, pretty cliche.

but i think this worked for me because despite all that, the relationship was so normal. matt was closeted but he didn't hate himself or really struggle much with his sexuality. trevor was cool and pretty secure in himself. and their interactions were just so nice and normal. eating pizza, studying together, making jokes. having hot sex, ya know normal college stuff.

yeah some of the drama was a little overwrought. i mean this is set in our day and age when gay marriage is legal, and while i am well aware that there is still a lot of prejudice towards LGBTQ+ people it still seemed a little much. i mean i live in the SOUTH and even people who are conservative are more or less fine with queer people. or at least enough to not try and beat them up. so having most adults be combative in this book was a little much for me.

honestly this was a fun read, the only reason it wasn't a 4 star for me is that it felt a little bit long. beyond that it was pretty nice although i wouldn't recommend this as a first foray into MM romances. pick something unique.
