This book is so powerful. ‘The Kitchen God’s Wife’ is my second Amy Tan novel and I can’t get enough of the simple yet achingly elegant way she writes. Every tale is poignant, whether it’s told by Pearl or Winnie, and I adored their stories from the first page.

Tan has a knack for exploring not only the female experience, but also the Chinese-American family and the cultural differences that separate each generation. She notes the way there’s almost a language barrier between Winnie’s traditional upbringing and Pearl’s contrastingly more modern one, leaving mother and daughter oddly estranged and unable to see eye-to-eye. In spite of this, the affection that Winnie and Pearl have for one another is so evident and makes for a really beautiful read, full of profound words about grief and hardship and love.

Personally, I really resonated with Pearl’s narration in this story, but Winnie’s was so gorgeous that I was never bored. I think I liked ‘The Kitchen God’s Wife’ more than ‘The Joy Luck Club,’ but both are still incredible. I just enjoyed getting to know two narrators instead of the plethora of narrators in ‘The Joy Luck Club.’ I highly recommend this book to those interested in profound, lovely, intimate stories of family, life and the evolution of tradition.
