The Chaos of Standing Still
by Jessica Brody
A solid 4.75. I listened to this in audiobook form, and listened to 80% of it in ONE DAY, because I just couldn’t stop!
The 24 hour timeframe and setting work VERY well, and I loved the quirky development of the side characters and the repetition and reappearance of important details.
I LOVED the love story, too. Very well-written. Made me feel fluttery. The whole nine yards.
That being said, I have a few minor issues with this book— at times, the author’s description grows repetitive, in places it doesn’t need to be. She said that Lottie’s hair was red, like, sixteen times. After a certain point, you can just say it’s pretty. You don’t have to mention the color.
The other issue is bigger, and the main reason it doesn’t earn a five star rating. During a party scene, a THIRTEEN year old boy is encouraged to make out with a TWENTY year old girl. It’s explicitly stated that SHE kisses HIM, and he is, at first, revolted, but then “gives up and enjoys it.” WTF??? That’s child molestation, and INCREDIBLY problematic. I was mostly confused as to how that EVER got through editing. It’s not “realistic,” it’s just gross. A sad, black stain on what would otherwise be a great book.
Overall, it’s worth the read! I really liked it, with the exception of the few tiny issues.
