The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

3.0

A slow start with an intriguing middle that petered out to nothingness as it constructed a paper thin villain to give the story some tension. The ending was unbearably cheesy and was unneeded. The interesting parts of the book were almost completely divorced from the plot. Following along with our two titular characters as they navigated a wholly new world was enjoyable but instead of making them pay the consequences of their previous actions, the author feels the need to interleave the stories together. Combined with multiple deaths (or paralysis) happening off-page with little remorse, the message of the book is clouded.
