4 stars - a beautiful book on mythology, Caribbean folklore and culture, grief, and a beautiful depiction of the love between a child and their parents, especially the mother-daughter relationship. Also liked the repetition of the "call and response" a lot! Added so much to the story. I'm glad that the hard part (grief) was not glossed over and that it went into detail, but was still handled in a delicate way. This is why I'll always have a soft spot for middle grade books.
