Strange Angels by Kathe Koja
4.0

This book will be offensive to a lot of people. I don't know how it was received when it came out, but man there's a lot to unpack here.

Talentless photographer Grant latches onto one of his girlfriend's patients, Robin. He's a schizophrenic who's been abandoned by his family and art therapy is part of his treatment. He lives in a group home when Grant decides to make Robin his project.

Grant is an empty shell of a man with no prospects, no goals, no ambition. He uses what little resources he has to isolate and "treat" Robin, who just gets sicker and sicker, while calling himself a friend, of all things. Everyone around them can see what's happening but no one cares enough to stop it.

This was harder to read than Cipher and Skin, two of Koja's books I've read recently. Those felt almost consensual and normal compared to this madness. Koja climbs inside Grant's mind and shows us the inner workings of a broken man.
