Midnight Tides by Steven Erikson

5.0

This continues to be the most outstanding fantasy series I've read. The world-building and intricacy and action of the plot remain unparalleled. The use of prophecy, foreshadowing, and hidden references all make for an extremely rewarding read as you piece together what is really going on. Five books in and only now do I feel I'm getting the hang of what's going on in the Malazan world. And there's still plenty I don't fully understand. I'm blown away each time I finish a book.

In this book in particular, the contrast of Letherii and Tiste Edur (capitalist vs traditionalist) cultures made for a very strong theme. The introspective and critical nature of Trull, the enigma and reveal of Bugg, the bad-assery of Iron Bars, and Tehol/Bugg chats were all highlights.
