In the Country of Others
by Leïla Slimani
This story is about a woman who leaves her ancestral home to set up a new life with her husband. The premise was intriguing but I found the narration inconsistent. The protagonist is sometimes angsty about her predicament, other times she's defiant and other times, she's even silly and playful about it. I also struggled with the actual prose, which felt stilted and choppy. Often, I'd trip over sentences like: "...her hair tied in a cowardly bun." How is a bun cowardly? This one I chose to abandon.
