We begin in the past, with the attempt of a young woman to leave an estate with her baby. She is shot, and we quickly learn that the Jardines (who own the estate) are Equals. They have power and are prepared to do what it takes to keep it.
This is a contemporary setting, but in a world where things are quite different. The idea of people having Skills to demonstrate their social standing is important, but I baulked somewhat at the regime of ten years enforced slave days.
Abi Hadley and her family are assigned to work for the Jardines. Things don't go quite as planned, and it is a definite story of many parts. It's clear someone is plotting, though we don't know exactly who or why.
This was an unexpected pleasure to read. Rather brutal at times, but I couldn't put it down!
