dark
mysterious
tense
fast-paced
I have mixed feelings.
On the one hand, I loved the fast pace and high tension. The way Deaver unravels the mystery really grips you and makes you keep coming back to reading. Still, there's space for retrospection and for relationship development so it's not just action, action, action. The characters are interesting and, honestly, it was great to see two disabled main characters.
On the other hand, I didn't love the narration's obsession with Sachs's body and looks. It felt unnecessary objectifying. The final reveal felt a bit rushed, and I'm not quite sure if I just didn't pay enough attention or if there hadn't been enough clues for the reader to solve it on my own.I didn't like that the killer clearly had breaks with reality, that felt like a cop out, but also, well, pretty 90s. Plus, the implication that Rhyme will want to continue to live because Sachs might fall in love with him was so reductive to both of their characters.
I reached for this book because I love the film, and overall, I think the film resonated more with me emotionally. But I enjoyed the novel enough to try the next one in the series.
