charliepritchard1996 's review for:
A compelling true story of the horrors of addiction and the bounds of parental responsibility.
The depiction of Nic’s formative years is gripping as much as it is revealing. However, in part perhaps because I have seen the film adaptation, I felt that the final part of the book drags and becomes repetitive.
The book is particularly strong in setting up Nic’s tragic demise, but as he continues to relapse and struggle through rehab, I increasingly began to think that it would be more revealing and interesting to read his account of this, as the addict.
I struggled to finish the book within a few weeks because of the flaws of the second half and the way that it was written meant that it was hard to really get into it when it should have been the business end of the account.
The postscript and the afterword are very good.
