The Song of David by Amy Harmon

emotional hopeful inspiring mysterious sad medium-paced

5.0

"The most intimate thing we can do is to allow the people we love most to see us at our worst. At our lowest. At our weakest. True intimacy happens when nothing is perfect."

Oh my heart… such a beautiful heart wrenching story.  The Song of David is told in such a unique way that Harmon kept me wishing I could devour it faster and at the same time had me savoring every word as I slowly fell in love with David the same way he did Millie. It's tender, sweet, hopeful, inspiring, and completely gut-wrenching at the same time. It's a love story, it's found family, it's having a blind girl open your eyes to life, love and living, it's being a fighter and learning what it truly means to fight. Few authors have the talent to pull off emotions the way Amy Harmon does... she doesn't just make us experience them but forces us to look deep within, to what we believe and how we face the obstacles in our lives.

"Life isn't perfect, people aren't perfect, but there are moments that are." The love between David & Millie is unexpected, beautiful, exquisite & breathtaking. From the first kiss, it's more than just sharing body parts, it's about sharing souls and discovery of the most intimate kind. Harmon makes our toes curl & our hearts beat faster. She makes us yearn to find our own soul-mate, or to be grateful for the one we have.

And oh how I love Millie’s brother, Henry. He is endearing, autistic, & so very special!  I love the bond he has with David & how he helps David understand & connect to his feelings. Henry had me in tears so many times throughout this book… “You’re a fighter, You love to fight, You’re a fighter!” Henry’s voice rose, and I realized what he was saying. “Millie fights! Mikey fights, Moses fights,” he said. My throat closed. “Henry fights?” This time it was more a question than a statement. “You do,” I whispered. “My dad didn’t fight.” His eyes met mine, the pleading in them so heartfelt, so determined, so beloved, that I couldn’t answer. Son of a bitch. He was killing me. “Tag Taggert is the best fighter in the universe,” he implored. “The best fighter in the universe.” I don’t know how I ever thought Henry wasn’t a good communicator.”

As the book approaches the ending, Harmon could have taken the easy route but she doesn't. Tag and Millie don't need your pity. Through their strength, Harmon reminds us that life is unfair to all of us, some perhaps more than others, yet life also gives us miracles that make it all worth it. Ultimately, Harmon's story is a celebration of love, hope, family, and fighting back. That's what makes life beautiful. The audio was absolutely beautiful!
