knowing the context of kuang blending the speculative Chinese history with narratives of family history makes the parts of the book that felt clunky make more sense (eg- tone shift from student to soilder as a jarring narrative bc of conversations w grandparents) and traumatic histories fictonalized (i lowered my rating tho when i saw how many tw i was tagging on)
