Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook by Christina Henry

5.0

I will never be able to look at Peter Pan in the same way. This review will explain why that is a good thing.

I have always been interested in villain origin stories because so many times in books and movies a good guy turns villain after a small dispute and that's that. But this book isn't that.

What this book is - it is highly disturbing, creative while staying true to the story (as far as realism goes), it's an emotional rollercoaster I didn't want to stop. 'Lost boy’ answered all the burning questions I had as a kid - Why does Captain Hook want to kill Peter so bad? Why is Peter the leader of the lost boys? Why does Peter never grow old yet James (Captain Hook) is an adult?

Things you won't get in this book. A happy ending... Obviously. Any mention to Wendy, as that hasn't happened yet. An explanation as to why, in the film's (I haven't read J M Barrie's original works) the crocodile follows hook around. You can make assumptions but that's all.

True fact about me: I used to dress up as Peter Pan often and pretend to fly. I might as well have dressed up as Jack The Ripper. Though my childhood is destroyed, I feel much more connection to Peter and James now.

So if you're a child at heart and Peter is your hero then this book isn't for you. But if you always thought he was a bit of a dick, you should definitely read this! You don't know even know half the story.
