Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
5.0

Even though I read [b:Lessons in Chemistry|58065033|Lessons in Chemistry|Bonnie Garmus|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634748496l/58065033._SY75_.jpg|90356333] by [a:Bonnie Garmus|21370624|Bonnie Garmus|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1634023482p2/21370624.jpg] almost a year ago, it still blows my mind that this is a debut. There aren't that many books where the story really sticks with me, but I can tell you that this is one of them. I was very appreciative that there was some great humor mixed in because Garmus really tackles what life was like for a woman in the 1960s, especially if you were a woman that wanted to do more with her life than just be a homemaker. Elizabeth really gets put through the wringer in this book and there were some parts that were extremely hard to read. And despite what some people might think, this isn't a romance at all, and while it does have a dash of romance thanks to Elizabeth and Calvin, this is a really small part of the larger story.

The audiobook was an absolute dream to listen to and I thought the narrator Miranda Raison brought so much to both the story and the characters that I couldn’t even imagine anyone else reading this book. The audio also happens to include an interview with Bonnie Garmus that is conducted by Pandora Sykes, so I would recommend it even based on that alone. It is some great bonus content that the book doesn’t include, and I enjoyed getting to hear Garmus talk. Lessons in Chemistry made me bawl like a baby and was an extremely emotional read. I was more satisfied with the end than I expected to be, and every single tear I shed during this book was completely worth it. If you enjoy feminist reads, historical fiction, and strong female characters this needs to be a must-read for you.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
