The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton
3.0

Not quite as good as The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.

The biggest turn off for me from this book is that I was never convinced a demon could be involved. I always felt there would be a rationale solution. If the characters had begun to doubt their belief in pure logic or it really was a demon, this would've been fantastic.

Additionally, the super friends team up at the end felt forced and didn't seem to align with Arent's values. You're my best friend and I idolize you Pipps. Oh you lied to me about my first case permanently shaking my belief in myself and you murdered a shit ton of people and you don't care about all the accidental casualties involved? No worries, we're still best friends. Lets go murder more people because we decided to be judge, jury, and executioner.

That said, I really enjoyed the characters and a lot of the world building in this novel. I just felt the mystery and wrap up could've been handled more skillfully.
