Gonna have to use the spoiler tag for this review because part of this book actually made me whisper-scream.
But first: in the beginning I was extremely uninterested in this book. Me a couple weeks ago would have been confused - a whole book about Chaol and somehow I'm disappointed? Well, the jump back in time came at such a stressful point in the story where Aelin went through hell and is gone and now its like - okay, lets dial it back a few months! I even did some googling to see if I had to read this one. Spoiler alert: you do have to read this one. Spoiler alert: its worth it!!
I was frustrated in the beginning but I ended up loving this book SO much. Can I just say I 100% called who was the secret Valg infiltration? Maybe its because I have read so many of Sarah's books by this point, but I called it immediately and when it was revealed (Duva) I basically celebrated. Okay so, the part that made me whisper scream: Maeve being a Valg queen. I did not pick up on this! It totally got me. I'm terrified and excited for what is to come.
And somehow I made it through this whole review without mentioning Yrene. I adore her and her wild nature. Sarah writes a lot of these characters and tropes and I honestly eat them up - I love it. I can't wait for Yrene and Aelin to meet again, though I fear it will be a long time. Starting the next book when I get home from work tonight, counting down the minutes!
