Munro by Kresley Cole

5.0

I am usually steering away from a standalone, especially those like this one that is part of a larger installment that covers an entire world on its own. It usually requires too much emotional involvement on my part to root for every character that will have at some point their own POVs.

However, I am making an exception from this rule of mine for authors like [a:Kresley Cole|4428|Kresley Cole|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1328377628p2/4428.jpg] or [a:Nalini Singh|71688|Nalini Singh|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1423312512p2/71688.jpg] who write almost all the time certified bangers. So, usually, when I find myself in a crisis of something sweet and well-written I come back to one of their books.

I chose Munro because it was still making a splash one year away from its initial release, so it had to be something special.

Indeed, it did not disappoint.

The romance part was on point, and the plot line regarding the adventures they had to go through was engaging. The only issue that I might have had with it is a more personal one, that is the fact that the female protagonist was from “Transylvania”—meaning Romania, and the author insisted for her to have lines in Romanian.

As a Romanian speaker, this book was a serious roller coaster: in a funny-cringey way.

I`ll give an example:

“Ah, you want me to be polite to my abductor. Be nice to you.” Voice a throaty purr, she said, “Should I cower for you, dragul meu? Will that make you feel strong?”

dragul meu is in Romanian. My immediate reaction when reading it, in this context was burn my eyes :))

The usage is just not there. As a native, I would not have picked this one from a list of other ten variants this one would have been the last. It is a bit too formal for this context and a bit too Cornish but not in the desired way—plus I was reading it in my head with the American accent and it was making things 100% worse.

But this was, overall, a very well-written book. I congratulate this author, once again, for being able to deliver such fine works of paranormal romance. I can say that I also appreciate her integration of the Romanian language, even though I cringed the entire book, I do appreciate the attempt. Thank you.
